Wedding Dress Wednesday: My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of the most famous romantic comedies of modern times. Its look into the life of Greek-American Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos, played endearingly by Nia Vardalos, made audiences laugh and cry happy tears. The end of the film sees Portokalos getting married in an ornate wedding dress that was designed by Michael Clancy.

Portokalos gets married in a Greek Orthodox ceremony. G.O. wedding dresses are traditionally fancy, featuring a wide skirt, lace, detailing on the bodice and are complete with a long veil. Clancy appears to have designed the stereotypical G.O. wedding dress for Portokalos! My favourite part of this dress are the lace gloves. They really compliment the lace detailing on the bodice. This detailing is beautiful and really suits Vardalos. I love the way Clancy has made the lace go down the bodice and onto the skirt. The silk flowers on the neckline are a distinctive part of the dress and look pretty and feminine. The veil really completes the bridal look, its puffiness frames Vardalos' face and shoulders beautifully.

Overall, Clancy has designed a traditional Greek Orthodox dress that suits Vardalos and looks pretty. This wedding dress will go down as one of the best outfits in romantic comedy history.
